What even is Acoustic Design?

What do you get when you cross an Audiologist & an Interior Designer?

Me. You get me. I’m Dr. Rebeca Witter - an audiologist turned acoustic design consultant and the founder of Acoustic Designs by Rebecca.

Over the last 15+ years of working in audiology, I’ve had hundreds of patients tell me the same thing:

“I can hear fine in quiet…but when I go out to dinner, I can’t understand a word anyone’s saying.”

or:

“My house echoes so much it feels like I’m living inside a cave.”

or my personal favorite:

“My spin class is great, but I leave with my ears ringing.”

And here’s what I realized:

It’s not always a hearing problem—it’s an acoustic problem.

The Rise of Beautiful (but Loud) Spaces

Design trends over the past two decades have leaned hard into minimalism: high ceilings, bare floors, open layouts, giant windows, metal, glass, concrete. All of it looks stunning—but it comes at a cost. These materials and layouts are super reflective, meaning they bounce sound all over the place.

So while you may have a Pinterest-worthy space, you might also be dealing with:

  • Conversations that feel like shouting matches 🗣️

  • Persistent echo and reverberation 📢

  • Mental exhaustion from trying to focus 🤯

  • And in some cases, actual long-term hearing damage 👂🏽

That’s Where I Come In

I combine my background in audiology (I know how the ear and brain process sound) with my passion for interior design to help you fix the noise without compromising style.

I help people make their spaces sound as good as they look.

Whether it’s a loud family room with vaulted ceilings, a buzzing café that wants a more comfortable dining experience, a fitness studio trying to find the balance between energy and safe listening levels, or a work-from-home office that needs fewer distractions—I’m here to help.

What Does the Process Look Like?

Great question! My process is thoughtful, collaborative, and customized for each client. But in a nutshell, here’s how it works:

  1. We Talk – I get to know you, your space, your challenges, and your goals.

  2. We Listen – I assess your space’s acoustic needs and take into account its design, function, and materials.

  3. We Plan – I provide a clear, 3D visual roadmap of design options: sound panels, slat walls, bass traps—you name it.

  4. We Transform – Together, we implement solutions that are effective, aesthetic, and perfectly matched to your environment.

And don’t worry—if the words bass trap and reverberation time make your eyes glaze over, I break everything down in plain English. No Doctoral degree required.
